Aggie News![]() Update 11/16/06 BARSI EARNS GWFC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORDAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis free safety Jonathan Barsi, who returned one of his career-high three interceptions for a 44-yard touchdown in the Aggies' 30-16 win over Sacramento State on Saturday, was named the Great West Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced on Sunday afternoon. Barsi, a 6-foot, 195-pound senior from Los Altos, pushed his season interception total to six and his career mark to 11, both of them tying him for fourth place on respective season and career lists at UC Davis. Barsi, who finished with three tackles and was part of an Aggie defense that held the Hornets to just 78 yards of offense in the second half, had a touchdown-saving interception at the goal line in the first quarter and another pick in the third. However, it was his interception near midfield toward the end of the first half that gave UC Davis momentum after he returned it 44 yards for a touchdown, helping to tie the game 13-13 at the break. Barsi had earlier provided another highlight when he returned a kickoff 72 yards - the eighth-longest in school history - setting up the Aggies' first touchdown. Barsi, an All-Great West Football Conference first-team honoree last season, is tied for the second-most interceptions in the latest NCAA Division I-AA rankings. North Dakota State wide receiver John Majeski was named the league's offensive player of the week after leading the Bison to the GWFC title with a 41-28 win over South Dakota State. Majeski rushed four times for 124 yards and a touchdown. NDSU's Travis White returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown and was named the GWFC Special Teams Player of the Week. UC Davis, which improved to 5-5 with its seventh consecutive win in the Causeway Classic, will try to secure its 37th straight winning season when the Aggies host unbeaten No. 14 San Diego (10-0) at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday in the final football game to be played at Toomey Field.
