The 1998-99 academic year marked the first time in school history that athletic grants-in-aid, or athletic scholarships, were offered to student-athletes at UC Davis. The athletic scholarships are distributed equitably among all teams with the head coach making the recommendation of which students are awarded aid.

Athletic ability, financial need, and academic standing are part of the evaluation and determination of who receives athletic aid. No single criteria is given priority in the selection process. The head coach must receive approval of both the athletic administration and the financial aid office to award an athletic scholarship to a student-athlete.

The grant-in-aid program at UC Davis places emphasis on awarding athletic aid to those student-athletes who best exemplify and represent the Davis philosophy of academic and athletic excellence. It is believed that athletic scholarships not only help finance the education of scholar-athletes but also help reduce the cost of student debt and the need to work significant hours while completing an undergraduate degree.

Student-athletes are encouraged to apply for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). California residents are also encouraged to apply for Cal Grants. The FAFSA can now be filed electronically over the web. Apply between January 1st-March 1st to receive priority consideration for state and university funding.
